Iguanas In The Wild
Iguana Habitat
In the wild, the common iguana or green iguana (Iguana iguana), the species most commonly kep in captivity, lives
in moist forest areas, ususally in close proximity to water.
With this in mind, iguanas should be provided with a high humidity and beathing facilitites in captivity to be totally happy.
Geographically speaking the green iguana may be found in Central America, including some offshore islands, which leads us correctly to think that
iguanas will also require a relatively high temperature in captivity and year-round heating of the tank, vivarium or terrarium (depending on who you are) is likely
to be necessary.
Fortunately, however, as we will see later on in this iguana section of the site, there are safe and cost-effective ways of doing this, which can be controlled highly accurately in order to keep your iguana safe
and healthy.
Iguanas are also what is known as arboreal or at least semi-arboreal. This means they often climb, and when seen in the wild iguanas may often be found lounging around on branches above the same water we mentioned earlier.
This not only enables them to sit in an area of high humidity (even higher than the forest around them) but also if danger arises to plop into the water below them and disappear.
Yes, iguanas can also be excellent swimmers, and this can be a useful thing to remember when you are cleaning Iggy out - that he can be given a warm (not hot) bath whilst you're doing your chores.
This is likely to be enjoyed by him and can be very beneficial to the quality of his skin also - something which often suffers in captivity.
