Iguana Care
Iguana Sexing
Sexing adult iguanas is very simple indeed.
The males grow quite a bit larger than the females and are more "bulky" in appearance. They also have far more developed
crests along the back and tail, and often a larger dewlap under the chin.
In male iguanas it may also be possible to see larger "bulges" psoterior to the vent than in the females due to his hemipenes.
Comparisons will generally be required for any level of accuracy to be achieved for the inexperienced.
Lastly, you can take a look at what are known as the "femoral pores". These "pores" will be found in a line along the underside of the back legs of an iguana.
In males these pores are considerably larger than in females.
Please note that as is the case with all the above characteristics, iguanas sexing is far easier the larger / older the iguana is.
The above differences tend to develop with age, though a practised eye may be able to pick out subtle differences sooner than a beginner.
