Iguana Species
Green Iguanas
There are a number of different iguana species, though the absolute most usual species, and that to
which the advice on this site pertains, is the common iguana, green iguana or South American iguana, depending on you.
All three names are correct, though I prefer green iguana.
I don't know why.
The importance is that you remember the latin name - Iguana iguana - which relates to
all three of these common names.
That way, if you're in any doubt, looking at a book, or in a petstore, you can check the latin name and you know where you are.
Curly Tail Iguana
The curley tail iguana or spiny tail iguana grows to just under 30cm in length so are far more manageable size than the common iguana,
but unfortunately are far less readily seen in captivity.
Furthermore, whilst their reduced size makes them more manageable in the captive environment, they are far less stunning, in my opinion, than the former species.
Desert Iguana
There are a range of species classified as desert iguanas. I'm in the process of writing some more information here so keep your eyes peeled!
